Derbion delivers sustainable ways to operate our centre - Derbion

Our Vision

Here at Derbion, we believe we must deliver sustainable ways to operate our centre, positively contribute to our communities, and promote healthy, sustainable lifestyles for all.

We want to continually improve and maximise efforts to mitigate climate change, adjust to our planet’s diminishing resources, adapt to people’s changing behaviours and promote a sustainable culture in our community.

Our Targets

Our Net Zero Carbon Pathway commits to become Net Zero by 2030 for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions from energy under our control.

It eliminates emissions from energy and refrigerants and removes the use of fossil fuel. Where necessary, compensate for residual emissions.

Here at Derbion, we believe we must deliver sustainable ways to operate our centre, make positive contributions to the communities around is and promote a healthy, sustainable lifestyle for all.

Here are some initiatives already underway, that help us improve ‘Our World’ and ‘Our Community’ …

Last year, we saved enough energy to power 180 homes a year

Last year we replaced our onsite recycling equipment and handled over 1400 tonnes of waste with zero going to landfill

We’re reviewing the installation of solar panels on our roof so we can generate our own electricity

95% of the centre is lit by LED lighting, with the remaining being updated this year

We’ve replaced energy sub-metering throughout our mall to monitor, target and reduce energy consumption

Severn Trent has visited all retailers and identified water saving opportunities

We’re working on a retail design guide to advise tenants on sustainable shop fittings

Retailer recycling schemes are on our website

We operate a secure Cycle Hub to encourage cleaner ways to visit us and offer a Cycle2Work scheme for Derbion employees

We try to ensure our centre is accessible for all by introducing sensory backpacks, quiet hours and reduced-capacity sessions at our events

Our Donation Station with Derby Food4Thought Alliance is now a permanent feature in our mall, collecting food, toys, and clothes for those who need them

Our team spent a total of 125 hours volunteering for local community groups and charities

We had 203 bookings for our free Community Hub space last year

Our targets for the year ahead

Reduce energy consumption by a further 10%

By improving lighting control and adapting levels of light throughout the day.

Increase our recycling rates to over 35%

Installation of new equipment that will enable us to separate and bale our cardboard on site. Work with retailers to implement a process for dry recyclables.

Install water saving devices to identified retailers

This should save our water consumption by 7000 cubic meters which would nearly fill 3 Olympic sized swimming pools.

Launch our sustainability plan

Communicate our sustainability targets, plans and progress to our customers, retailers and employees.

Support our charity partner of the year, Umbrella

Increase awareness of their cause, and raise £10,000 for their charity.

Volunteer 187 hours to community projects

Encourage and enable Derbion employees to volunteer for Derby community and charity groups.

Support children in our community

Help local families get ready for the new school year with the return of the Uniform Hub and help more children be exposed to books through our participation in Derby Book Festival.

Derbion to a better future

We are committed to driving change by making Derbion and our communities sustainable for now and the future
